Ok everyone ready, set GO! While we are all looking for the best and healthy foods to help us reach our health and fitness goals, not all deemed "healthy" foods stack up the same. Remember, it's important to be a label reading expert meaning, not just the nutritional label the FDA requires, but the ingredients list. Here is a perfect example. Nutritionalists have been telling us to switch to Almond, soy and hemp milks instead of cow's milk, right? Saying it's lower in calories, fat and lactose free, which is all true. But not all of those alternate milks are the same. Many have sugar in them disguised as all sorts of fancified names. That's where reading the labels comes in ...LOOK AT THE NUTRITIONAL LABEL UNDER CARBOHYDRATES FOR SUGAR CONTENT. Shouldn't be any... ZERO GRAMS, period. Then, look at the label for vitamins and fiber content. Many of the alternate milks have different ingredients and contents. My favorite brand, if you live in Texas and you can get to a HEB market is
"HEB ORGANICS ALMOND MILK UNSWEETENED ORIGINAL" NO SUGAR, 5 grams of fiber, and loads of good for vitamins like calcium. Plus, it tastes yummy in coffee, cereal, smoothies, cooking and anything you would use milk in, even cold in a tall glass...VERY REFRESHING! I have looked at Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Sprouts markets and have not found one that compares. Let me know if you do. Until then...
